Next LPPAS Meeting – Monday 24th April

The pies have now been ordered for the next meeting of the LPPAS will commence at 9:30PM on Monday 24th April at The Black Bull. Local pride will be at stake this time with top class pies from Bolton & Bury going head-to-head. All are welcome from Bolton, Bury and beyond.

The meeting has been brought forward by a week so that it doesn’t clash with the bank holiday. Lovers of quiche and spring rolls are likely to be disappointed as the pork pies will provisionally be from Urmston and Walshaw. This will be confirmed nearer the day.  The last two meetings have provided top class pies, so let’s hope we can keep the standard up again.

It promises to be another excellent night for pie lovers. The tap room was overflowing last time and so, if you are planning to sample the pies, please let Steve know or drop us an email at lancsporkpies@gmail.com

A New Leader: Walmsley’s of Ramsbottom

LPPAS Event Report 3rd April 2017

As has been said before on these pages, the great Spanish author Cervantes claimed that ‘hunger is the best sauce’. Some 500 years after he first coined the phrase, events at The Black Bull conspired to reinforce Cervantes’ enduring wisdom. Inexplicably, there had been a breakdown in procurement from West Lancashire, which meant pork pies from just one supplier were to be sampled. Although alternatives such as quiche and spring rolls were offered, these were received as thin gruel by the pie hungry crowd. Fortunately though, the supplier from Ramsbottom, Walmsley’s Butchers, is clearly a monarch of his profession and the pies sampled were agreed by all to be top class.

Walmsleys2A full report of Walmsley’s Pork Pie will follow. But the headline is that it goes straight to the top of the charts, just overtaking Pitt’s of Earby for first place overall. Not only that, but the pie goes to the top of the pastry and pork charts too, missing out on first place in the jelly chart to Pitt’s masterly pie.

The results are shown below, for what one of our taster’s described as a ‘Ronaldo of the Pie world’:

Walmsley’s Standard Pie

Next LPPAS Meeting – Monday 3rd April

The next meeting of the LPPAS will commence at 9:30PM on Monday 3rd April at The Black Bull.

As usual the meeting promises a variety of quality pies. Whether they can top the excellent quality of the pies from March’s meeting remains to be seen. At the time of writing, the pies on offer have yet to be finally confirmed, but we have identified top quality pies from across Lancashire from Lytham, Ramsbottom and Warrington. A final decision will be made after some pre-sampling to ensure quality.

In addition to chutney and mustard there are again rumours (as yet unsubstatiated) that mushy peas will be provided.

All in all, it promises to be an excellent night for pie lovers. The tap room was overflowing last time and so, if you are planning to sample the pies, please let Steve know or drop us an email at lancsporkpies@gmail.com

Start British Pie Week in Style at the Next LPPAS Tasting Session.

The next meeting of the LPPAS will commence at 9:30PM on Monday 6th March at The Black Bull.  Monday 6th is the first day of British Pie Week, and despite our misgivings about the distinctly Southern composition of the judges, it is only fitting that we mark the event with a pie-packed tasting session of good Lancashire Pork Pies. The meeting promises a variety of quality pies. Landlord Steven Bentley has promised to source some top class pies. Steve’s keeping his suppliers secret, but we can also reveal that our East Lancashire Representative will be bringing, what he promises are, first class pies from the very edge of Lancashire in Earby. In addition to chutney and mustard there are also rumours (as yet unsubstatiated) that mushy peas will be provided.

All in all, it promises to be an excellent night for pie lovers. The tap room will be bulging and so if you are planning to sample the pies please let Steve know or drop us an email at lancsporkpies@gmail.com

Official Launch Event

The official launch of the Lancashire Pork Pie Appreciation Society will take place at 9:30pm on Monday 13th February at LPPAS headquarters, The Black Bull, Edgworth.

The launch will take the form of a tasting session of two specially selected pork pies. Having sampled the pies, with their drinks of choice, LPPAS committee members will  grade each pie in terms of: overall excellence; pastry; pork and jelly. Over the coming year we are hoping to discover the best pork pies that Lancashire has to offer. In December we will crown the champion pork pie in Lancashire (effectively the best pork pie in the world).

As part of the launch a number of pies for sampling will be available to guests but due to limited budgets anyone wishing to partake should let Steve, the Landlord of the Bull know in advance, either in person or via email at steve@blackbulledgworth.co.uk
